The Tobacconist's Wife by AnneMarie Brear

The Tobacconist's Wife

Having lost her father, Thea Goodson is alone in the world.

It is true she has a husband, but Ernie is a brutal man, more inclined to use his fists to keep Thea in line than to build on their marriage. And besides, Ernie Goodson has secrets – secrets that even his wife cannot share.

But in Victorian Yorkshire, appearances must be kept up, so Thea goes on powdering her bruises and forcing a smile as she toils in Ernie’s home and tobacco shop. There seems to be no other option.

That is, until a handsome and well-bred stranger arrives to set up shop next door…

Can Thea escape her misery and break from the conventions of society? Or will the clutches of her abusive husband confine her forever?

The Tobacconist’s Wife is the latest book from AnneMarie Brear, the highly acclaimed author of bestselling The Slum Angel.

In the author's words . . .

Interview with AnneMarie Brear

Books & Benches: From what we've heard, this is a book to definitely give a chance, and we're thrilled to be a part of spreading the word about The Tobacconist's Wife. It's nice to get to know the authors behind the books a bit better, so let's here from AnneMarie . . .

Please tell us a little about your newest release.

My newest release, The Tobacconist’s Wife, is about Thea who married a man she didn’t love because she was alone in the world. However, the man who she thought he was turned out to be nothing like that and instead is a bully and horrible person. Unexpectedly she meets Adam and he changes her life, but she is trapped in a marriage and sees no future for them. It’s a journey of love and sacrifice in the face of danger.

What do you hope readers will take away from this story?

I hope they take away the sense of enjoyment, of having grown to care for Thea and Adam and want them to succeed. I write stories for entertainment, but maybe this story might help other women to be strong and fight for what they want.

Do you have to be alone or have quiet to write?

Yes, I like to be alone in my study when writing, though I do have my daughter’s two dogs which like to be my companions throughout the day. I don’t find I write well when there’s people in the house and/or noise. To emerge into another time I like to concentrate and and I can’t do that when there’s too much background noise or people chatting. So I write when I’m alone in the house.

What type of hero do you like best?

I write historical so I like strong heroes who have flaws. He can’t be perfect, as that’s not realistic and it’s boring. I like a man who can look after himself as well as a lady but who also respects her independence and her own strength of character.

What do you think about when you are alone in your car?

If I’m not singing at the top of my voice, then I’m planning scenes in my head, thinking of possible new stories. I sometimes get to my destination and not remember much of the journey!

Books & Benches: Thank you, AnneMarie! By the way, behind this blog are authors, and we totally get the "not remember much of the journey," part of driving as we plot scenes.
